Muslim population in India

India is a varied country with several religions. Hinduism is the major religion, comprising 79.8% of the population. Islam is the second-largest, accounting for 14.2%. Other religions, including Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Jainism, each have less than 1% of the Muslim population in India are rising at a higher rate than Hindus. Between 2001 and 2011, the Muslim population in India expanded by 24.6%, while the Hindu population increased by 16.8%. Some individuals are concerned that there may be more Muslims than Hindus in the future. However, these figures can alter for a variety of reasons, including birth rates, population movements, and government regulations. Also, these figures are only approximations and may not be entirely correct.

In 2023, Muslim population in India is estimated to be 19.7 crore, accounting for 14.2% of the total population. Muslims make up a sizable minority in India, with certain states having a bigger Muslim population than others. Lakshadweep has the greatest percentage of Muslims, accounting for 96.58% of the total population. This signifies that Muslims constitute the vast majority of the population.

Jammu and Kashmir is the next state with a Muslim majority, with 68.31% of the Muslim population in India.

States such as Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manipur, Goa, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu have a large population, but they are a minority. This suggests that many Muslims in these states account for less than 50% of the entire population.

In the other states and territories, the Muslim population in India is either extremely tiny or nonexistent. This comprises states such as Chandigarh, Meghalaya, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab, Sikkim, and Mizoram.
