Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage was an English Engineer and inventor who is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer. He is therefore often called the "Father of computer". Charles was known to be the jack of all trades. He was also a mathematician and a philosopher. His early ideas and concepts led to the invention of more complex analytical electronic computers. In 1991, a functioning difference engine was made using Babbage's plans.

Charles Babbage's Early Life

Charles Babbage was born in London in the early 1790s. His father Benjamin Babbage was the co-founder of banking firm Praed's & Co. Banker and politician William Praed was his partner. Charles attended grammar school when he was young but due to his ill health, his father decided to get him tutors at home. One such tutor from Oxford, prepared him for admission into the Cambridge.Charles had a leaning towards Mathematics.

Charles Babbage's Career

Charles Babbage went to Cambridge but could not get an honors degree from there, he instead obtained a degree without even taking the examination. Nevertheless, he was able to further sharpen his skills in Mathematics. He maintained a reputation of a fine mathematician and in 1816 he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. He tried to take up job of lecturer at Haileybury College and University of Edinburgh, but failed to secure any. Charles Babbage, along with his Cambridge friend John Herschel, concepts of electrodynamics but failed to device a proper theorem.

The Difference Engine

Charles Babbage, being a good mathematician himself, was well-versed with the log tables and at that time when there used to be a high rate of human errors in calculating math tables, he was bent on finding out a more precise method to calculate tables properly. Then, one day he decided to make a mechanical machine to do the arithmetic operations. But he thought that in the machine would not be of much use if it could not calculate complex calculations accurately and in less time.
While he was sketching out ideas to make the machine, he focused mainly on two problems: one, was to add one digit to another and the other was to be able to carry the tens, if any, to the next digit. In the initial designs, he made wheels with place for mechanical teeth to go in. These wheels had numbers printed on them. Charles presented his idea before the Royal Astronomical Society and published a paper - "Note on the application of machinery to the computation of astronomical and mathematical tables". His plans were approved and the government gave him a grant of £1500 to build the machine. Charles hired Joseph Clement to assist him. They worked on the project for years but after years of hard work and capital invested into the project, it was shut down in 1830, due to differences arising between Charles and Clement.

Analytical Engine

After the failure of his first project, Charles Babbage decided to make another machine which would not be restricted with doing the polynomial calculations alone. He thought of an analytical machine which could be used to calculate any type of numbers or equations. Charles Babbage decided to use punched card for his engine. The engine would consist of two parts: the mill and the store. The mill would execute calculation on values fetched from the store. Mill paved the idea for the analogous CPU of present time and 'store' would become what today is the memory of computers. Thus, this design of Babbage is often considered world's first-general purpose computer. However, this project never saw the light of day. Babbage was not able to convince the government or private donors to fund the project and he had to call it off.

Second Difference Engine

Taking note of the designs of the previous engines and enhancing them further, Charles Babbage came up with new ideas for another engine. For 3 years, between 1846-49. He drew up a new blueprint, this time with fewer parts than before. It was a near perfect design but Babbage decided not to build it. These original designs were later used to make a real-life engine to honor 200th anniversary of Charles Babbage and the working machine was kept on display in London Science Museum.

Charles Babbage's Personal Life

Though his father was against the marriage, Charles Babbage married Georgiana Whitmore in July 1814. Charles and Georgiana raised eight children together, however only 4 of them could reach adulthood. In 1827, Charles' father, his wife Georgiana and one of the sons, passed away. It deeply disturbed Charles and forced him to stop the work on his first difference engine and take a tour of Europe. This had many people in the government and the scientific societies to believe that Charles had given up and wasted government's money. Charles Babbage was offered to be awarded knighthood and baronetcy, but he refused.
