Asima Chatterjee

Asima Chatterjee was an Indian Organic Chemist. She is Accredited with doing remarkable Work in the Field of Organic Chemistry and study of Phytochemicals. Asima Chatterjee has also Worked on set of Anti-Mitotic and Anti-Micro-Tubule Alkaloid Agents Named Vinca Alkaloids. Asima Chatterjee's 100 Birth Anniversary is being Celebrated on 23 September 2017. Google has made a Doodle in her Memory.

She was a Nominated Member of the Rajya Sabha from February 1982 to May 1990. In 1975, she was presented the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award by the President of India. She was also the first Woman to be Conferred a Doctorate of Science by an Indian University.

Asima Chatterjee's Early Life
Asima Chatterjee was born in Western part of Bengal on 23 September 1917. Asima did her honors in Chemistry from Scottish Church College. The college's academic affiliation is with University of Calcutta. Asima Chatterjee then obtained a master's degree and a doctoral degree in organic chemistry from the same University.Her studies into the field of chemotherapy drugs proved to be of much value.She had some help from scholars from University of Wisconsin.

She was able to develop the anti-epileptic drug named 'Ayush-56' from Marsilia minuta, a species of aquatic fern and the anti-malarial drug from Alstonia scholaris (a tropical tree from the Apocynaceae family), Swertia chirata, Picrorhiza kurroa and Caesalpinia crista.

Prof.Praful Chandra Roy and Prof. S.N.Bose were her contemporary researchers.Asima Chatterjee was the first to suggest stereo-configuration of sarpagine. She also helped with the investigation of mechanism of acid-catalyzed hydramine fission of beta phenyl ethanol amines.

Asima Chatterjee did thorough studies on many complex indole alkaloids, quinoline and isoquinoline alkaloids.Asima Chatterjee devised simple synthetic routes to a number of complex coumarin systems and studied the action of various Lewis acids on prenylated coumarins.

She joined Lady Brabourne College and served there as the founding head of the department of chemistry. She later joined the University College of Science as an Associate Professor. In 1940, Asima Chatterjee became the First woman to be conferred a Doctorate of Science by an Indian University.

➯ In 1944 Asima Chatterjee was conferred Doctorate of Science by the University of Calcutta and she was the second Indian woman after Janaki Ammal to be recognized in this manner.
➯ From 1962 to 1982, Asima Chatterjee was assigned prestigious and coveted chair of Khaira Professor of Chemistry (University of Calcutta).
➯ Asima Chatterjee was appointed and sanctioned by University Grants Commission as the Honorary Coordinator of the Special Assistance Programme to intensify teaching and research in natural product chemistry
➯ In 1960, she was elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.
➯ In 1961 she received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and became the first ever woman to receive such an award.
